Elkhart Lake: the place for racers, music makers
Offering up a German-style helping of music, singing, and perhaps a bit of dancing among the audience, the Dorf Kapelle band will make its 19th appearance in Elkhart Lake at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17.
The band – its name German for “Village Band” – will perform at Firemen’s Park in the village.
The band’s appearance is just one event on a summer calendar chock-full not only of musical entertainment, but of sports car racing, of course, along with plenty of slower-moving outdoor activities.
And one of those activities will be the very popular Elkhart Lake Triathlon, which will be held on Saturday, June 28. Beginning and ending at The Osthoff Resort, the triathlon features swimming in pristine Elkhart Lake, running in and around the village and cycling on circuits that extend into the area’s beautiful Kettle Moraine topography.

SCCA Runoffs move to Road America in ‘09
In a move that promises a huge impact on the Elkhart Lake economy, the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), will move its National Championship Runoffs to Elkhart Lake-based Road America in 2009.
Negotiations are planned to bring the event to Road America from 2009 through 2011.
The roughly weeklong event attracts approximately 700 of the nation’s best amateur race drivers. Generating thousands of room bookings, the event promises to have a dramatic impact on the local economy. Based on the financial impact elsewhere, the event should result in a local economic boost approaching $10 million annually.
“Given the deep history the track, the Village of Elkhart Lake and SCCA enjoy, it only seems natural for the most prestigious club racing event in the world to be hosted by Road America,” SCCA President and CEO Jim Julow said.
Added Road America President and General Manager George Bruggenthies: “The SCCA has been an integral part of our 53-year history. The opportunity to showcase our facility and our community is a tremendous honor. On behalf of our board of directors and staff, my thanks to the SCCA for their confidence.
Trains move through village after long absence
For the first time in roughly a decade, trains consisting of anything more than a few rail cars moved on tracks through Elkhart Lake recently.
The Wisconsin & Southern Railroad moved some 130 cars through the village for storage on remote track located midway between Elkhart Lake and Kiel.
Bill Klaetsch retires from EL Police Dept.
After 20 years patrolling the land and water of Elkhart Lake, Officer Bill Klaetsch is officially retiring.
The veteran officer came to symbolize the quiet professionalism of the Village’s Police Department.
While Klaetsch no longer will perform over-the-road patrols, he has indicated that he will continue to take on lake patrol duty on a part-time, as-needed basis.
