Two unique Memorial Day ceremonies and celebrations take place here:

On Saturday, May 25, 2013 a tribute program is held at Veterans Memorial Park in Elkhart Lake. Bring your lawn chairs to the park located on the corner of Highway 67 and Chicago Street. Event begins at 11:00 a.m. Food and refreshments will be made available after the ceremony by the Elkhart Lake Lions Club. This year’s featured speaker is Colonel Ronald R. Wilson who was born and raised in Elkhart Lake and is a 1978 graduate of ELGHS. He has served eight years of active duty and more than 22 years in the Air National Guard. Colonel Wilson is highly decorated and served in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq.

On Monday, May 27, 2013 celebrate Memorial Day with us in the Town of Rhine in rural Elkhart Lake for the Memorial Day Celebration & Picnic from 11 am to 4 pm at Town Rhine Recreation Hall (Cty E & Cty FF). Delicious sandwiches and desserts! Enjoy an old-fashioned country picnic with all the trimmings.

Parade at 1 pm followed by a Veterans Program – Town Rhine Memorial Cemetery and Civil War Monument (one of three in U.S.A.)

The Monument, one of the first in the state erected following the Civil War, was dedicated July 4, 1868, in remembrance of 115 men from the town of Rhine who volunteered to serve in the Union Army. The names of 23 of those soldiers who were killed in action are inscribed on the monument along with the battles where they died

Memorial Day Weekend

It’s been a long winter and we’re ready for summer and all the fun that comes with it. Memorial Day Weekend is Elkhart Lake’s official start of summer. The Lake Deck at The Osthoff Resort and Barefoot Bay Tiki Bar are set to be open with live music Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 24-26, 2013.

Performing at the Lake Deck will be JONES (Friday), MOMMY’S LITTLE MONSTERS (Saturday) and RED FISH (Sunday). At Barefoot Tiki Bar, catch BOWSER on Friday, HOUNDSTOOTH BLUES on Saturday and ABLER BOYS on Sunday .

Watersports rentals will be open and filled with lake fun. The water may be a bit cool but everything else in Elkhart Lake will be hot, hot, hot!

Less than two miles from Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin lies Road America – a four mile road course considered by the motorsports community as not only the best in the United States, but also one of the world’s premier race circuit.

After the State of Wisconsin banned racing on open roads, civic leaders looked for a way to retain this enthusiasm for racing and its concurrent economic benefit. Clif Tufte, an Elkhart Lake engineer, spearheaded this effort, along with local business leaders and the Chicago Region of the Sports Car Club of America, purchased farmland, created a course, and in September of 1955, Road America ran its first race.

“Racers, fans and even the media have a fond affinity for Road America,” said George Bruggenthies, track president and general manager. “It has a special appeal like no place else, for many fans Road America was their first racing experience and now coming back every summer is a tradition, plus you can’t beat the appeal of Elkhart Lake, the surrounding scenery and the off-track hospitality that the local area provides. For racers, the track layout has remained unchanged since it was first built and mastering its daunting twists and turns has become a formidable challenge for any driver.”

Farmers & Artisans Markets Start June 1

Everyone’s favorite event is right around the corner. The first Farmers & Artisans Market falls on Saturday, June 1 this year. Gardeners , hobby farmers, crafters and artists bring their goods to the Historic Railroad Depot every Saturday morning through mid-October. You’ll find fresh produce and bakery. Artists, fine craftsmen, and antique dealers bring a unique assortment to the village square. The market opens at 8:30 am and closes at 12:30 p.m. Stay for lunch and check out the local retail shops for more specialty items.
