Frozen In Time

By Kate Vollrath

For one hundred years, Gessert’s has been sweetening the days of locals and visitors alike.  Those of us who were raised on the sugar and cream of the iconic ice cream parlor remember hoisting ourselves onto the bright green stools every summer as we devoured the lovingly arranged sundaes in the antique glassware. Stories were shared and rituals were passed on to us over malts and house specialties, such as Dinosaur Freckles and the Dusty Road.

When I was young, Yvonne, the owner at the time, was the sundae queen behind the counter. The place wasn’t set up for grab and go then, rather you sat on one of the stools (but never swiveled, because that was impolite and would deteriorate them) and perused the menu as you would at a fine dining establishment. The counter wasn’t very large, so when you went, it was with a small group, the type of outing you planned with your closest people. A date at Gessert’s was meaningful.

There was the relief of walking in on a scorching summer afternoon and meeting the air conditioning, knowing you would soon be eating something frozen. I remember my childhood friends and I watching Yvonne prepare the sundaes, taking in her methodical assembly. She would begin by reaching her arm into the ice cream case, a case so deep we swore she could fit inside. Then the toppings, whipped cream, and a cherry delicately placed on top. There was a peaceful rhythm to how she carefully arranged each element in the dish.

She was serious about her craft and through the glasses on her face you could see her kind eyes paying close attention to each and every item served. The anticipation of receiving a sundae so thoughtfully created made it taste even sweeter. She taught us how to hold the special dishes and always gave us tiny cups of water, because ice cream makes you thirsty. Thanks to Yvonne, I know the role malt powder plays in transforming ice cream into something even more decadent and still choose malts over milkshakes anywhere I go.

Through her devotion to the ice cream dining experience, we were taught etiquette and the importance of savoring summer with loved ones. My most vivid memory while sitting at that counter was trying a chocolate soda for the first time. I don’t remember how old I was, but I do remember my father insisted it would be the summer for me to discover them. My grandparents shared their love of Gessert’s chocolate sodas with him at a young age, and now it was my turn to see what all the fuss was about.

As a devoted Dusty Road patron (chocolate ice cream topped with marshmallow cream and malt powder), I was incredibly curious about what carbonated chocolate would taste like. Because we were at Gessert’s, I knew this was the type of treat to sip slowly. It wasn’t easy for me to do that though, because my first taste was transformative and made me want to inhale the whole thing down within seconds. That day changed my life and I’ve searched far and wide to find a chocolate soda as good ever since. Finding them on menus at all is a rare occasion.

While the ice cream was divine, I think most would agree the experiences were memorable due to the feeling of life pausing for a moment as you gazed up at the Coca Cola posters above the counter while listening to big band oldies play on the a.m. radio. As you watched Yvonne make masterpieces with such care, you were invited to enjoy it more deeply. When you are given the opportunity to savor, the memories really stick with you, lasting long after you finish your ice cream. Sitting at that counter as a child, you tasted what would one day be the very thing you returned to – the unlocking of nostalgia, a visit to summers past.

While Yvonne no longer greets you behind the counter, the new owners have done an outstanding job of continuing a legacy that locals and visitors come back for. The preciousness of the place remains with the light up sign out front beckoning you inside. Once you enter, you’ll be greeted by the aroma of house made waffle cones, and you’ll likely hear 1920s tunes playing. Towards the back of the main room, you’ll notice booths surrounded by black and white photography that documents the historical significance of the establishment.

In the very back room, you can still see a tribute to the counter and stools that we were taught to sit politely on as kids. Today, when you glance at the menu, you’ll notice they still offer the chocolate sodas. If you’ve never had one, I recommend you try it. Whether you go for an ice cream soda, a malt, or a sundae, it is worth the additional time to enjoy it within the walls of Gessert’s. Don’t sip or eat your treat too fast though. Really savor it. If you let it linger on your palate, chances are it will linger in your heart too. This is the Elkhart Lake way. May it continue for at least one hundred years more.

Frozen Ground and Fresh Flakes at Quit Qui Oc

Dear February, why so frigid? And why so snowy?

Winter seems to have swept in with full force, bringing storms, fresh flakes, and freezing temps to Elkhart Lake. I know what you’re thinking. “I’m over winter and all its storms and snowflakes.” I hear you. We’re at that point in the season of turning the long last corner. Spring, where are you?

As someone who always gets a little sad to say farewell to fresh snowfalls (yes, it’s a unique relationship with winter), I’ve found that when people work with the season, rather than against it, more joy and beauty can be experienced. I suppose I am suggesting an open-minded approach to winter and considering what it brings as a blessing rather than a burden. I know for some I will never be able to change your position on this one!

For those who can convince themselves that snow is not a nuisance, but rather a special gift, I encourage you to explore the winter wonderland that the Quit Qui Oc Golf Course provides this time of year. All my life I never stepped foot onto the golf course while it was covered in a fresh white blanket, but this year that changed. Turns out, the glacial landforms take on a whole new magic this time of year. It’s sparkly and serene. It looks like a different planet from that of its summertime green.

It’s the perfect place for walking and snowshoeing after a fresh snowfall. There are just enough hills for those who want a challenge, while totally manageable to maneuver around large hills for those who prefer things steady and flat. If you’re curious to try out snowshoeing, but aren’t ready to take the plunge with purchasing your own gear, Quit Qui Oc has you covered with rentals.

If you have your own gear, check in at the office, strap on in, and hit the trail to take in a whole new experience of the village’s stunning golf course terrain. You can pay for a day rate to try it out, or consider a membership option and join the Walking & Snow Shoe Club. With this membership you get a cool winter cap and dining credits for Quit Qui’s Clubhouse. It’s a great way to keep your whole family moving outdoors until the snow melts and it’s time to bring your clubs out to the course.

You can view Quit Qui Oc’s winter membership opportunities, day rates for trail access, and gear rental options on their website here:

https://www.quitquiocgolf.com/about/walking-snow-shoe-club/.

Stay healthy and safe and enjoy the snow!

What can you get for a buck these days? Ask Zoe. She knows.

By Señor Momento

Some visitors think Elkhart Lake is expensive and only for the affluent. Others think vacationing here is quaint, relaxing and a real deal! It all depends on how you perceive value. In my eyes, you don’t need a fancy automobile, car condominium or home on the lake to enjoy the Elkhart Lake I love so much. No matter who you are or how you look at it, a visit to Elkhart Lake’s Fireman’s Beach is a sweet deal.

A few sand toys and a good imagination are all you need to enjoy a day at Firemans Beach.  Just remember to Keep Elkhart Blue and preserve it for future generations.

Although I live here now and can take advantage of Elkhart Lake’s residents beach, I decided to show my granddaughter, Zoe, the beach of my youth and where I took her daddy and uncle to swim when they were little boys. Back when I was a child, occasionally someone would take us to Elkhart Lake to swim. The long, hot car ride from home to Elkhart Lake seemed to take forever — although it was only about 30 minutes.  Four friends and two moms packed in a sedan with no AC was not a fond memory; especially if you were the one stuck in the front between the moms. By the time my boys made the trip to Firemans Beach, at least we had air conditioning in the car — I think?

My fond memories of Firemans Beach have not changed much. The sandy area for digging rivers and building castles has been expanded. A sand volleyball court is quite the luxury as are the new restrooms. But it’s a joy to visit the same concession building which remains relatively unchanged over the past 60 years. Yikes! As a test of time, I gave Zoe just a $1 bill to see what she could find to fill her sweet tooth. Well, she didn’t need to spend it all to be satisfied. I love that little girl.

Zoe helped me replay my fond memories of the concession stand. Firemans Beach remains a generational treasure. Be sure to visit Bella at the concession stand and thank her family and the Elkhart Lake Fire Department for keeping this property open to the public. But hurry! The park closes on Labor Day for the summer season.

On the day of our visit, Bella Cain was working the concession stand for her family’s business. Happily she let Zoe examine the many containers of penny candy. There were bags of goodies for 50 cents and boxes for just 25 cents and, of course, there were ice cream treats and chips at family-friendly prices. At a gate admission of only $3/adult and $1/child, you can spend the entire day and evening on the shores of beautiful Elkhart Lake.

Today, with just a 2-mile trek to the beach, it’s a breeze to get there. And, sitting on the beach with a delightful breeze off the lake has become a family favorite.

Señor Momento

Señor Momento came to rural Elkhart Lake 25 years ago and has no plans to head south! Country life, and its close proximity to the lake, beach and fun activities in the village make retirement years a pleasure for the Momento family. To quote Señor, “Grandparents, children and grandchildren are happy here. It’s a generational joy.”

Balance Your Summer: Pack up the kids and head to the Library.

By Martha Schott

Swimming, boating, fishing, biking, playing, laughing… so many images come to mind at the first mention of a visit to Elkhart Lake in the summertime. If you are a kid, the excitement of a day or a week or a summer at Elkhart Lake is almost overwhelming. And that’s exactly why I’d like to propose another amazing Elkhart Lake experience to balance the swimming, boating, and fishing activities, and that is reading.

Reading?

Yes! The Elkhart Lake Public Library is an amazing resource for kids and parents who visit our area from near and far. Our grandsons Ethan King, age 13, and Noah King, age 11, are currently signed up for the library’s Summer Reading Program which runs from June 10th to August 17. The boys got to the library regularly this summer because they also signed up for the two-week Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah summer school program, and many summer school activities involved the library.  (Did you know that out-of-towners can participate in summer school here?)

Noah and Ethan in front of the “Universe of Stories” wall.

The theme this year’s library reading program is “A Universe of Stories,” and all of the story times and programs have a space travel theme to them.

Each kid who signs up for the program is invited to color a rocket ship cutout which is posted on the “universe of stories” wall along with the kid’s photo. Each kid also gets a special book bag and, once they log reading hours, they get coupons for The Milwaukee Bucks, The Wisconsin State Fair, The Milwaukee Public Museum, and more.

The King boys got free ice cream at Culvers thanks to the reading program.

In addition to the coupons, kids can actually win prizes for reading – and good prizes, too!

Ethan and Noah with Library Director Betty, in front of the display of prizes.

We visited the library recently to check out new books and return the ones the boys had finished. Ethan was looking for the next book in the Veronica Roth series after the book Divergent, and Library Assistant Rachel Montes helped him order the book from another library. She also introduced him to another series that she thought he might like based on his interest in the Roth series. “My son likes this series, and I think you’ll like this too,” she said.

Both boys agreed that the librarians are really helpful.

“Rachel helped me find some World War II books I was interested in,” said Noah.

“The prizes here help motivate kids of all ages to read because they have something for everybody,” said Noah (Noah has his eye on the portable phone charger.) “You might win a really good prize – which is a lot better than reading for hours and getting a pencil.”

Ethan has his eye on the Discovery rocket that can soar up to 30 feet powered by baking soda and citric acid.  Prizes are determined by a drawing of names based on the number of hours each kid has read and the kid’s choice of prizes.

There is a group prize too. All the kids were rewarded for having a cumulative total of over 500 hours of reading as of July 17th. In fact, the more than 100 participants in the summer reading program logged 912 hours by that deadline, and they were all invited to a build-your-own sundae party at the library on July 17th hosted by Library Director Betty McCartney.

Coupons and prizes and parties are great, but of course, the real benefit of the library program is the connection kids feel with the people who help them at the library and their personal growth through reading.

So Elkhart Lake locals and visitors, when your kids or grandkids (and you!) need a break from the sun and outdoor fun that we enjoy in abundance in this unique village of ours, think about getting involved in the Elkhart Lake Public Library. The summer reading program continues through August 17, but you can enjoy this friendly resource year round.

You don’t have to be a local – in fact you don’t even have to be a kid. All ages are invited to participate in the library’s Summer Reading Program.

The library Summer Reading Program is sponsored in conjunction with the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Elementary School. The Friends of the Elkhart Lake Public Library helped raise money for the Summer Reading Program.

The library is located at the Grasshorn Civic Center, 40 Pine Street, Elkhart Lake. ElkhartLakePublicLibrary.org

Come On, Nana. Let’s Play!

By Señor Momento

Welcome to Elkhart Lake, a multi-generational vacation spot. Most of us who live here, also vacation here.  We don’t find many reasons to leave home.  But a visitor may be escaping a busy lifestyle and seeking Elkhart Lake’s small town, simple rhythm for a weekend, a week or for the summer.

If you are like me, a senior grandparent with young littles, you may be looking for ways to dodge King Cobra and its 335-feet of twists and turns at speeds up to 30 mph! In Elkhart Lake, you can run straight to the Lazy River (our beautiful blue lake) and everyone is happy. But there are other things to experience in our small village with a big, big heart. Here’s an idea.

Teach your grandkids a lesson — but have some fun, too!  Elkhart Lake’s grand resorts and summertime traffic are a huge safety concern for all.  But, thanks to our highly trained, skilled and dedicated volunteer fire department, first responders and police department, you are in good hands.  The Elkhart Lake/Town Rhine Fire Station is amazing but the men and women involved are even more spectacular. Be sure to give your grandchildren a close look! There are several opportunities to visit the firehouse, examine the newest, state-of-the-art equipment, trucks, uniforms and protective gear. Young eyes will be opened wide to an exciting, important and fulfilling job. Talk to the firefighters. Introduce your grandchildren to these selfless individuals who are dedicated to your safety. Many young people make fire and rescue a career goal after a tour and one-on-one conversation at the firehouse.

Opportunities to meet, greet and support the department occur throughout the year.  When you visit in April, stop at the firehouse for ALL-U-CAN EAT breakfast.  Visit with old friends. Make some new ones. Chat with the firefighters.

After filling up on pancakes and syrup, my 6-year-old granddaughter, Zoe, had a good time learning about his duties from a fireman who took the time to show her around the station.  Who knows, maybe one day she’ll fit into the gear and wear it proudly as a bold and brave Elkhart Lake firefighter.

Another opportunity is coming up July 5 through 7.  The ELFD holds its annual 3-day celebration with a picnic at Fireman’s Park and Beach. A spectacular fireworks display over the lake kicks off the weekend on Friday evening. A great parade fills the street on Sunday morning. Your grandkids will scramble for loads of candy tossed throughout the hour-long, steady stream of exciting entries.  The parade route ends at the park but the fun continues with a 5th quarter performance by the UW Marching band, food, games, polka music and party festivities.

In the fall, don’t miss the ever-popular fish boil with indoor and outdoor learning opportunities for all ages.  It’s a great way to spend some valuable time with your grandchild and you won’t need to climb a 6-story water slide to impress them!

Señor Momento

Señor Momento came to rural Elkhart Lake 25 years ago and has no plans to head south! Country life, and its close proximity to the lake, beach and fun activities in the village, make retirement years a pleasure for the Momento family. To quote Señor, “Grandparents, children and grandchildren are happy here. It’s a generational joy.”
