Wisconsin Meetings — Destination Elkhart Lake
By Melanie Radzicki McManus & Wisconsin Meetings
At first glance, Elkhart Lake might seem like a curious spot to hold a conference or meeting. The village is small, with approximately 1,100 residents. About 60 miles from Milwaukee and 100 miles from Madison, it’s not on an interstate highway. And it has a casual, flip-flop vibe. But once you set foot in this charming town snugged against Elkhart Lake’s eastern shore, you quickly see its appeal.
First, there’s the lake — a crystal-clear body of water that’s perfect for swimming, boating or simply relaxing. Then there’s the downtown — a quaint space filled with unique restaurants and boutiques. Then there are three sprawling resorts: the Shore Club and Siebkens Resort, both of which date back more than a century, and The Osthoff Resort, a stunning, white facility with hints of Victorian-era grandeur. Finally, there’s Road America, one of the world’s most challenging road-racing courses, which lies 2.5 miles south of town.
Kathleen Eickhoff, executive director of Elkhart Lake Tourism, says groups that choose to meet here walk away wowed. She says they love the lake, they love the town’s walkability, and they quickly notice that virtually all of the businesses are locally owned and run. “There’s just one franchise, a Subway, so you’re almost always welcomed by the owner,“ she says. “Our visitors love to engage with the owners of our businesses. It makes them feel welcome, comfortable and like an extended part of our community.“
A Variety of Meeting Venues
The village’s three resorts offer a complementary selection of meeting spaces. The Osthoff is the most traditional venue, with 38,000 square feet of meeting space that can serve up to 1,500. Its largest ballroom is the 10,000-square-foot Grand Libelle, while the Palm Garden Ballroom offers another 7,500 square feet of space. Guests can stay in one of 240 rooms or suites and, in their free time, relax in the resort’s Aspira Spa.
Tracie Toth, director of sales, says The Osthoff serves a diverse array of groups and needs — from Fortune 250 companies to state associations and religious retreats. Many of these events are groups of 400 or less, and many are repeat customers. “They love our tenured staff. Our team of people truly care about their event’s success, first and foremost,“ according to Toth. She adds that meeting planners also appreciate the resort’s well-appointed meeting rooms and sumptuous suites, which spoil attendees with luxuries such as fireplaces and private balconies.
As the cherry on top, there’s the resort’s professional audiovisual team, which provides hands-on service. “Audiovisual can make or break an event,“ Toth says. “You won’t have any worries here.“
When it’s time to relax, guests can head to the resort’s private beach, golf at nearby Quit Qui Oc Golf Club, hit the spa or perhaps take in a wine tasting at Vintage Elkhart Lake. Owner and sommelier Jaclyn Stuart offers numerous events, plus she creates wine tastings for business groups.
If team building is on tap, The Osthoff offers everything from scavenger hunts and Family Feud-type competitions to more novel activities, such as cocktail making, beer and cheese tasting, and an etiquette dinner in which participants learn proper business dinner decorum. Then there’s Toth’s favorite: a cooking competition. During one such event, teams had to shop at a market The Osthoff set up, then create a meal from the available ingredients. But there was one catch. After teams decided upon their meal, The Osthoff introduced a mystery ingredient — bologna — that all the teams suddenly had to add.
“Imagine that!“ Toth laughs. “The teams created all of these fancy meals and then they had to incorporate bologna.“
While there are no ballrooms or bologna-based competitions available at the nearby Shore Club, you can find 40 guest rooms that were recently renovated and, for meeting space, a 4,400-square-foot theater that was built around 1900 and offers great lake views. The theater has a stage fronted by a dance floor, where staff can create a variety of seating arrangements. “Our theater has really taken off,“ says Tanya Curtin, director of sales. “People like its old-school vibe.“
The Shore Club sits on about 5 acres of land, so outdoor events are also popular here. When meetings are over, guests can enjoy the resort’s 600 feet of private beach, live entertainment or a plethora of lake activities, as Elkhart Lake Watersports rents a variety of watercraft from The Shore Club’s beach.
“If you’re looking for something unique and historical, that’s us,“ Curtin says, adding the property’s niche is groups looking for a casual atmosphere.
A few paces away, Seibkens Resort — favored by the racing crowds that flood the village when Road America is holding an event — is a beloved spot for groups to hold dinner meetings. Its main dining room can hold up to 200, while smaller groups can dine on its sun porch or outdoor deck, or in its historic saloon or gazebo yard.
Golfing and Racing
Across the road from the lakeside resorts, Quit Qui Oc Golf Club has been in business nearly a century. The business offers 27 holes of golf, a driving range, chipping and putting areas, and also a bar and restaurant. Todd Montaba, who owns the business with his wife, Rachel, says they work closely with customers to offer seamless events. “We’ll set everything up and have names on the carts so guests can just get in the carts and start playing.“
Quit Qui Oc’s course is very playable, making it great for beginners. Yet there are challenges for veteran players, too, part of which come due to its age. Montaba says Quit Qui Oc was established in 1923, when there were no bulldozers to create a highly sculpted course, “so they shaped the land with horses and plows and by hand, and left a lot of the land as it was.“ In this part of the state, that means a lot of rolling hills.
But Quit Qui Oc is not just about golf. In addition to hosting golf outings, the business organizes scavenger hunts, campfires, snowshoeing and moonlight strolls.
While golfing might be a common pastime during meetings and conferences, road racing is decidedly not. That is why Road America is such a bonus for groups meeting in Elkhart Lake. The 640-acre venue can host groups topping 2,000 via its Tufte Center, Road America Center, VIP Tower, outdoor tents or even Victory Lane. Limited lodging is available in 12 cabins and an off-site chalet.
And lest you think a road-racing venue is all concrete and steel, think again. John Ewert, Road America’s communications director, says the property maintains its natural topography and original features, so you can find hills, barns, old farm trails and even rock walls that once separated pastureland. “When there aren’t cars on the track, you feel like you’re in a national park,“ he notes.
Guests can explore this “national park“ through many activities, such as all- terrain vehicle (ATV) off-roading, disc golf, geocaching and go-carting. Other entertainment options for free time include outdoor movies, pace car driving and, of course, road racing. Ewert says the Road America team loves to get creative with groups, too. To that end, the team once created a mini Olympics in which teams earned points according to how well they did at disc golf, cornhole, geocaching and more.
This kind of fun, coupled with a warm, welcoming spirit, is what makes Elkhart Lake so special, Montaba says. “All of us business owners work in our businesses every day, and we want guests to come here and love Elkhart Lake as much as we do.“

Disc Golfing Opportunities in Elkhart Lake
By Logan Schroeder
When you think of Elkhart Lake’s Road America, odds are your mind starts to envision top flight drivers jockeying for position in thrilling, jaw-dropping races. While there is no question that you will have an unforgettable experience hanging out at the National Park of Speed on a busy race weekend, what you may not know is that the action doesn’t have to stop when the races aren’t in town. For both avid and casual, inexperienced players, the village of Elkhart Lake offers a number of unique disc golf challenges. I had the opportunity to take on two of these fantastic courses over the late summer and early fall – Road America and the Disc Golf Course at Marsh Park.
Road America

Disc golf at Road America is a terrific course for just about any player, regardless of how one might classify his or her skill level. It offers a wide range of hole distance: anywhere from 172 – 384 ft. The course also presents a healthy variety of terrain. You will find yourself trekking your way up some considerably hilly areas while also weaving your way through dense thickets and narrow fairways. My favorite part of this course is the crossover from the front to the back 9, when you make your way over the Sargento Bridge overlooking the racetrack. For just a moment you can feel those race vibrations as you make your way to hole 10. Be careful on the eleventh hole – you will need to avoid the pond on your left as you enter a more heavily wooded portion of the course. For the best possible value, try out the Road America disc golf course during a Monday or Wednesday evening between May and September during Road America’s 4 Miles of Fitness .
Disc Golf Course at Marsh Park

Sheboygan County Marsh Park is certainly a change of pace from the one offered by Road America but no doubt provides an equally entertaining experience. The course is shorter and much more heavily wooded. If you do not bring but spray, you will regret it – trust me! The designers were very funny and creative in their work, coming up with amusing names such as “The Squiggler” and “The Stinker” for each hole. Perhaps the most apt name choice is “The Gapper” on Hole 5 – the fairway is nice and straight, but the thick line of trees on either side spells trouble for a wayward drive out of the tee box. Close out this impressive course by ascending up a wooden tower and throwing down at the basket on the unconventional 18th Hole. Hopefully you aren’t afraid of heights because the higher your skill level, the higher your tee box!
Whether you’re passionate about disc golf or just getting started on a new hobby, you are missing out if you haven’t yet teed off at Road America and the Marsh. Both of these courses are available year-round, so come on out – rain or shine, summer or snowfall. Continue to check in on (insert link to website here) for exciting course news and updates such as tournaments and specials. Best of luck as you conquer these two beautiful courses and explore all that Elkhart Lake has to offer.

A SUP Tour of Elkhart Lake
By Mike Koehler
For many tourists and locals alike, the most common view of Elkhart Lake is from the walkway and overlook near the Osthoff resort. The views are splendid, but for a different – more adventurous – view of Elkhart Lake consider a stand up paddleboard (SUP) excursion on the lake. This post takes you on a SUP tour of Elkhart Lake.
For starters, the best time to paddleboard on Elkhart Lake is mornings before 10am or after 7:30pm to sunset as slow-no-wake rules for boats are in effect during these time periods. Let’s face it, navigating wind created waves atop a paddleboard is tough enough, let alone wake from boats.
Those with access to the resident beach are allowed to launch SUP’s adjacent to the beach, but for others the best option is to launch at the public boat launch located at County Road P west of Elkhart Lake on the western most portion of the lake and that is where this journey begins (Point 1).

You begin the journey through a narrow bay and will notice in front of you the signature buildings of Camp Brosius, a family camp that has been in existence for approximately 100 years.

Upon exiting the bay, navigate right and Elkhart Lake opens up before you and atop the paddleboard you will come to appreciate the crystal clear waters of Elkhart Lake. Although Elkhart Lake generally has a wooded shoreline, being on the water best allows you to see the many well kept homes, cottages, piers and boathouses that dot the shoreline (Point 2).

One of the best things about being on a paddleboard on Elkhart Lake is the flexibility it provides and the ability to jump in and create your own personal swimming area. Indeed, one of my favorite things to do while paddleboarding on Elkhart Lake is simply to rest my arms on the board, float in the water, and watch the world go by. (Point 3).

Being on the lake provides different vantage points seldom seen including this view across the lake to the Osthoff Resort in the background. (Point 4)

Although Elkhart Lake is one of the deepest lakes in the state (maximum depth approximately 120 feet), there are portions of the lake that are shallow including Turtle Bay where the water depth is approximately 2-4 feet. (Point 5). This tranquil bay provides a calm retreat from the wind and boats and offers a unique perspective “looking out” towards the lake proper.

As you navigate the perimeter of Elkhart Lake, you will also notice that its shoreline is diverse. Some portions of the lake are shallow 15-20 feet from the shore, whereas other portions of the lake are 7-10 feet deep just a few feet from the shoreline. One of the most dramatic “drop offs” in Elkhart Lake is near the point exciting Turtle Bay as the depth changes from approximately 1-2 feet to well over 10 feet in a matter of seconds (Point 6).

Paddleboarding on Elkhart Lake is enjoyable generally from May – October. In the spring, the water tends to be the clearest and the lack of underwater vegetation during this period provides the best opportunity to view fish atop a paddleboard including Elkhart Lake’s resident giant muskies. During summer, the water of course is most enjoyable and provides ample opportunities to jump off your board and enjoy your own private swimming area. Thereafter, Fall brings color to the shoreline and creates beautiful reflections on the water. No matter the season, a SUP tour of Elkhart Lake’s perimeter (generally a 1.5 to 2 hour trip) is an enjoyable excursion and a unique way to “Be a Resorter.”
Take the Scenic Cycling Route
By Mike Koehler
Elkhart Lake has a vibrant cycling scene and for good reason – the well maintained, sparsely traveled country roads around the Village provide an ideal location to explore our beautiful countryside. So, after you have immersed yourself in Elkhart Lake’s crystal-clear waters (and perhaps had too much to eat or drink at one of Elkhart’s Lake’s outstanding restaurants) a little pedal power exercise might be in order.
The route highlighted below (approximately 15 miles) is one of my favorites and takes you to several other notable area destinations.

Exit Elkhart Lake to the northwest on County HWY J until you reach County HWY SR. Along the way, you are likely to see wild turkeys or deer grazing in the nearby fields and woodland areas. You are now at the entrance of the Sheboygan Broughton Marsh Park & Campground and the road takes you along the Sheboygan River. If you are looking for some cross-training, the 80 foot tall observation tower (the tallest in the state) is available for climbing and provides an excellent birds-eye view of the 13,000 acre wildlife area.
Back on the saddle, exit the Marsh area by turning right and pedal south on County HWY P past the Elkhart Lake boat landing for a different vantage point of Elkhart Lake. Thereafter, continue south until you reach County HWY A and turn right into the Village of Glenbeulah – “The Northern Gateway to the Kettle Moraine Forest.” County HWY A turns into Main Street in Glenbeulah and your next turn is south onto S. Swift Street which soon leads – after a few quick turns – to County HWY S – a true gem of a road leading into portions of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. Indeed, this road is designated a “Rustic Road” by the State of Wisconsin and the route provides an enjoyable rolling experience. Just remember what comes up, must come down and vice versa! Take County HWY S all the way to HWY 23, turn around, and take the “Rustic Route” back into Glenbeulah and notice how going the opposite direction provides a different visual and biking experience.
Back in Glenbeulah retrace your previous route by heading east on County HWY A and then turning north on County HWY P. However, you are going to take an alternate route back into Elkhart Lake by turning right on County HWY C and soon you will be in Crystal Lake – another gem of a lake. Head southeast until you reach the intersection of County HWY J, turn north, and the road winds around Crystal Lake before heading north back into Elkhart Lake past the Glacial Nine of Quit Qu Oc Golf Course.
Interested in upping your cycling game? You might want to check out 12 Hours of Road America, an endurance bike (and run) festival from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on August 14-15th. During the event, you will have the opportunity to cycle the iconic 4-mile racetrack. However, unlike the Indy and NASCARs from recent races, you will have to supply your own “horsepower” and – from personal experience – let me just say you will be wishing for a pit stop after a few laps on the challenging course.

15 Best Family Friendly Restaurants in Elkhart Lake, WI
By Deb Steenhagen
Located an hour north of Milwaukee, Elkhart Lake offers crystal clear waters, plenty to do and a variety of culinary experiences. Whether you’re visiting with your family, significant other or on a girlfriend getaway, the Elkhart Lake restaurants have you covered.
Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin may be a small town, but it is bursting with flavor. Each of the three resorts on the lake has more than one restaurant, and there are several others either in or just outside of town that have a great deal to offer as well.
I recently visited Elkhart Lake and had the opportunity to eat at many of the local spots. I am not always the most adventurous of eaters, but I enjoy the chance to try new dishes whenever I can. Elkhart Lake certainly did not disappoint!
There is only one chain/fast food restaurant in Elkhart Lake (Subway). And while it certainly fills a need for quick takeout, you’ll have a chance to sit and relax and enjoy the food and the ambiance at any of these other local restaurants.
Please note: In 2021, many of the Elkhart Lake restaurants are open with limited hours and have had difficulty hiring and retaining enough staff. They ask that you please be patient and are doing their very best to provide the best service as possible.

Kayaking the Sheboygan River
When most people think of outdoor recreational activities in Elkhart Lake, the crystal clear, spring feed waters of Elkhart Lake are at top of the list. And for good reason.
However, what many tourists (and many locals alike) don’t know is that near Elkhart Lake the Sheboygan River meanders its way through a rural landscape and provides a relaxing retreat for kayakers and canoeists.
Beginning in eastern Fond du Lac county, the Sheboygan River flows for approximately 80 miles into Lake Michigan in Sheboygan. The best, more scenic portions of the river are located a few miles east of Elkhart Lake as indicated in the below map.

The float described in this post began with a short drive from Elkhart Lake and putting in the river at County Highway EH (there is a bridge over the river and ample parking space just before or after the bridge – simply park your car on the side of the road and walk down to the river). Another car was parked down river in the small community of Johnsonville which has ample parking off of County Highway JM.
Water flow is obviously dependent on weather conditions, but in most months (April – November) the river has a nice, steady flow and rarely exceeds four feet in depth.
Floating a river provides a unique perspective on the landscape and the width of the river (generally less than 50 feet in most locations) provides an intimate way to experience nature and see (and hear) the many bird species which frequent the river and its banks. Indeed, on this specific float a bald eagle was spotted in a tree along the river.
As you continue your float in a general southeasterly direction, you pass through the unincorporated community of Franklin and its feed mill (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) and come to appreciate how a water source was an important historical asset for many communities.

As you exit tiny Franklin, the river continues its twists and turns through rural landscape and you eventually arrive in Johnsonville, another unincorporated community that just happens to be world famous as the location of the Johnsonville Sausage Company and its succulent bratwursts. At Johnsonville, the river passes over a small dam that is appropriately marked and there is an exit opportunity near a concrete barrier on the right bank of the river.
On this day, the float ended at Johnsonville – approximately a 3-4 hour paddling journey from the beginning off of County Highway EH depending on water conditions and paddling vigor. However, if you want to continue your journey down the Sheboygan River you can continue for several more hours of enjoyment and the next logical stopping point is just after the river crosses Highway 23 as there is a small park with ample parking just off of Meadowlark Road.
The Sheboygan River is truly a “hidden gem” and provides yet another enjoyable way to experience the outdoors in and around Elkhart Lake.

Frozen Ground and Fresh Flakes at Quit Qui Oc
Dear February, why so frigid? And why so snowy?
Winter seems to have swept in with full force, bringing storms, fresh flakes, and freezing temps to Elkhart Lake. I know what you’re thinking. “I’m over winter and all its storms and snowflakes.” I hear you. We’re at that point in the season of turning the long last corner. Spring, where are you?
As someone who always gets a little sad to say farewell to fresh snowfalls (yes, it’s a unique relationship with winter), I’ve found that when people work with the season, rather than against it, more joy and beauty can be experienced. I suppose I am suggesting an open-minded approach to winter and considering what it brings as a blessing rather than a burden. I know for some I will never be able to change your position on this one!
For those who can convince themselves that snow is not a nuisance, but rather a special gift, I encourage you to explore the winter wonderland that the Quit Qui Oc Golf Course provides this time of year. All my life I never stepped foot onto the golf course while it was covered in a fresh white blanket, but this year that changed. Turns out, the glacial landforms take on a whole new magic this time of year. It’s sparkly and serene. It looks like a different planet from that of its summertime green.
It’s the perfect place for walking and snowshoeing after a fresh snowfall. There are just enough hills for those who want a challenge, while totally manageable to maneuver around large hills for those who prefer things steady and flat. If you’re curious to try out snowshoeing, but aren’t ready to take the plunge with purchasing your own gear, Quit Qui Oc has you covered with rentals.
If you have your own gear, check in at the office, strap on in, and hit the trail to take in a whole new experience of the village’s stunning golf course terrain. You can pay for a day rate to try it out, or consider a membership option and join the Walking & Snow Shoe Club. With this membership you get a cool winter cap and dining credits for Quit Qui’s Clubhouse. It’s a great way to keep your whole family moving outdoors until the snow melts and it’s time to bring your clubs out to the course.
You can view Quit Qui Oc’s winter membership opportunities, day rates for trail access, and gear rental options on their website here:
