A Rainy Day in Elkhart Lake…. We’ve Got You!
Most people would agree that the jewel of Elkhart Lake is our beautiful crystal-clear lake. Understandably so, we focus a lot of attention on lakeside activities like watersports, Tiki Bar, Lake Deck lakeside music, dining alfresco, along with a myriad of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, golf, motorsports racing, etc. Wisconsin summers are short, so we want to soak up as much outdoor time as we can!
This summer has started out with a bit more rain in the forecast. But never fear, Elkhart Lake is an All-Weather destination. We have a great collection of things you can do rain or shine.

Indoor pools – If you can’t be in the lake, you can still get your laps in or grab your friends for an old favorite – Marco Polo. Indoor pools are available at both The Osthoff Resort and Shore Club and can be hours of family fun!
Arcade Games – I know….when we go on vacation we want our kids outside running around- unplugged from screen time – I’m with you! But when the rain persists, you can engage your whole group with some air hockey, pinball, pool, foosball and of course some great arcade games like the new VR Godzilla game in The Osthoff Resort’s Arcade.
A good book – a must when we travel! If you forgot to pack one, there are a few spots in town with some good reads! You can find both fiction and nonfiction options at Gift’s of Grace and the Elk Trader at the Osthoff Resort. I love browsing through home decor and cookbooks too. You’ll find nice options for both at Gina’s Fine Gifts and Framing and Nordic Accents. Then off to find a cozy fireplace, quiet nook or to the pool area and enjoy some vacation reading.

Kids Club – If you and the kids need a break from each other, the Kids Club at The Osthoff Resort has you covered. With a variety of indoor kid’s activities, you’re sure to find the perfect fit like Tiny Chefs, Tie-Dying & Cup Cakes, Arts & Crafts and Build & Construct. They even have a Movie Night! Be sure to register, as participation may be limited.
Elkhart Lake a Public Library – We are so fortunate to have a great library with a plethora of great Summer Library Programs for Youth, Teens and Adults. Located one block from the Village Square, it is easy to find and super friendly to visitors. You might event consider getting yourself a library card, especially if you visit us regularly. But no card is needed to participate in programs.

Aspira Spa at The Osthoff Resort – Nothing says vacation like taking time to relax and pamper yourself! Aspira is the perfect place to dial it down and take care of YOU. With the wide variety of signature services, you’re sure to find a few to fit your preferences. Prior to or following your services, be sure to plan for extra time in the sauna, whirlpool, and meditation sanctuary areas. Then finish off your visit in the Spa Café with a delicious smoothy and healthy bite to eat.
Shopping– always a sought-out vacation activity. Rain or shine, you’ll enjoy the collection of beautiful shops available in Elkhart Lake. You’ll find great women’s and men’s activewear apparel at Elkhart Lake Outfitters and spiritual wellness products and programs at Intuitive Balance. Visit Two Fish Gallery and Schamberger Gallery for Fine Art and Crafts. Stylish boutique clothing and products at Lake Threads & Field, Aspira Boutique and Gina’s Fine Gifts and Framing. Home décor at AspenOak and Gifts of Grace. Take home a few uniquely Elkhart Lake gifts from Small Town Big Family. Don’t miss Road America’s Paddock Shop and Quit Qui Oc Pro Shop for you golf and race apparel and gifts.

Wade House Historic Site – You’ll step back in time as you explore this beautiful property. View the Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum, Wisconsin’s largest collection of carriages and wagons. Visit the 27-room Wade House stagecoach inn as it comes to life with costumed guided tours. Don’t miss the expansive grounds where you’ll also see the Herrling Sawmill and Dockstader blacksmith shop.
Cheese Please – If you’re a fan of WI Cheese, then you’ll want to check out Henning’s Cheese in Kiel! As you traverse the county roads from Elkhart Lake to Kiel, you can’t miss the beautiful rolling landscape and dairy farms. Much of the milk in our area goes to local cheese makers like Henning’s Cheese, a fourth-generation cheese makers who takes great pride in their craft. If you get there before 10:00 a.m. you’re likely to see the cheese making process, visit their museum and of course try some delicious cheese.

Blue skies ahead!
Fine Food and Wine, a Family Legacy — 25 years of Lake Street Café
There’s something about living and working in a seasonal rhythm that makes time move differently than in other places. In Elkhart Lake, in the summer, things move fast. Really fast. So fast in fact, that one June day you may wake up ready to take on another weekend and realize the business you’ve started from the ground up is turning twenty-five!
This June, Lake Street Café is celebrating its 25th summer in Elkhart Lake. I recently had the pleasure to soak in the ambiance of the dining room and reminisce with the restaurant’s owner, Lynn Shovan. The restaurant is where my family has celebrated many milestones, and this year, Lynn is celebrating her own family’s significant milestone. My sister and I took one look at the menu (though we didn’t really need to) and quickly decided what needed to be done. “Tenderloin Shiraz?”I asked her. She nodded in agreement and without giving it two seconds of thought said, “Orecchiette? We can split them?” It was decided. As Lynn filled our wine glasses, we told her what we ordered. “Why fix what isn’t broken”,my sister told her. Lynn smiled as she replied “I couldn’t agree more. That’s the way we feel around here too.”

What was once the Corner Bar on South Lake Street became a restaurant that would transform the village’s culinary landscape in 1999. With John hailing from Waldo and Lynn from Sheboygan, the Shovan couple worked hard learning all they could in Sheboygan County hospitality establishments such as Pine Hills, Trattoria Stefano, and The American Club. After learning the ropes from others, they wanted to create their own vision. “We kept on meeting people who had traveled to Elkhart Lake for the road races. We noticed they were driving to Sheboygan for more restaurant options. We loved Elkhart and ended up renting a house here. The more time we spent in the village the more we realized there was room for another year-round restaurant.”
Lynn reminisces on the early stages of opening the restaurant. “When the building went up for sale, we kept walking by and imagining what it could be. One day, John said to me ‘What if we made the room right on the corner a quaint little dining room, and moved the bar to the other side of the building?’ We looked at each other and said, ‘Oh my god, that’s it!’ We made an offer the next day”.
Lynn laughs as she remembers the decision to embark on such a large undertaking while raising their two children, Jake and Sydney. “We had a two-year-old and an eight-month-old and figured if we’re going to do it, now is the time. Why not?! Our kids grew up in our restaurant. Sydney took her first steps here! I’ve told Jake and Sydney that when they are filling out applications for jobs, they need to make sure they mention that they’ve worked at Lake Street Café since they were toddlers.”

Anyone who’s dined at Lake Street in the last 25 years has seen at least one, if not multiple, members of the Shovan family in the restaurant. While according to Lynn, “Sydney can run the cold side kitchen like nobody’s business”, Sydney has been eager to continue expanding her skills in hospitality in her general manager role at the Crystal Lake Golf Course. Jake has also wanted to experience how other family businesses run things. After welcoming many guests into the doors of his own family’s establishment, he has ventured to The Brewery located on well-known Water Street in Milwaukee.
In addition to the Shovan’s themselves, there have been countless other families that have proudly made Lake Street Café their place of work. If you grew up in Elkhart Lake, chances are you pulled shifts in the front of house or kitchen. If you didn’t work at Lake Street, you most certainly had a family member or close friend who did. This familial element of the restaurant is linked to the village’s tourist economy. Elkhart Lake restaurants serve a major role in providing teens with their first jobs. Then, should the young employees venture away for college or other opportunities, the restaurants continue to welcome them back in the summer. “We always tell our younger staff, you can always come home,” says Lynn.

Lynn credits another very important branch of the Lake Street family tree for the success of her business – the neighboring restaurants in town. “There’s such comradery. We all encourage and support each other. I love eating at the Paddock Club and I’m thrilled about the new pizza spot, Harry’s. Anywhere I’ve worked across the United States in my career, I’ve never had the sense of family that we’ve had here. There isn’t the fierce competition I’ve experienced elsewhere. We all do something a little different, and it makes us all stronger.”
It truly does take a whole village, a village who believes in what sets you apart and understands the challenges of making ends meet during the sleepier months. For John and Lynn, their meticulous attention to the finer details of the dining experience, along with prioritizing fresh ingredients, emerged as what set them apart. From the start, John and Lynn divided and conquered. Lynn oversaw the details of the kitchens, and as for John, he was and always will be known as the master of wine.
“John had the opportunity to work at the Immigrant Room at the American Club. That’s where he really started to learn a ton about how to develop a list and the purchasing. He built our wine program starting on day one. When we opened, he told me he wanted to have a Wine Spectator accredited wine list. I said ‘Okay, but we gotta start small, because we have no money!’” Lynn chuckles as she recounts this lofty goal in ‘99.
A year after opening, they submitted their list to Wine Spectator and continued to submit every year. By 2003, they received their first award, Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence. Once John made his dream a reality, he did not stop there. He continued expanding the list with new producers and varietals. In 2016, they received the next level up, the Best of Award of Excellence, making Lake Street Café one of four restaurants in Wisconsinto hold the esteemed credential.
“John was thrilled when we received that Best Of award. We had 600 different wines on our list at that time! He knew every bottle and where it was in the cellar. He would go through the wine every single day and I would print a fresh list. He never wanted someone to order a bottle and for us to not have what they were excited about.” Since 2003, Lake Street has continued earning an award every year and today maintains the Best of Award of Excellence.
This unwavering enthusiasm for doing things the right way is still felt with every bottle poured out for guests even though John is no longer with us. When you enjoy a glass at Lake Street, your glass is filled, never skimped. Locals know this hospitality affectionately as the “Lake Street pour”. To this day, no matter where I’m dining across the country, if a place fills my glass to the brim, I smile and think to myself “Ah, now that’s a Lake Street pour”. The Shovan’s have always acknowledged gratitude for their community through gestures such as this. It’s the Elkhart way. It’s what keeps us all nourished and inspired to do our best work in our own lives.
While Lake Street’s wine program has played a major role in giving the restaurant its elevated status, the salt of the earth hospitality and consistent spot-on menu items have also sustained its reputation. The restaurant offers the magical quality of allowing diners to experience the best of both worlds– one side of the building being a laid back, lively tavern, and the other being a quieter, quaint dining room. So, whether you’re seeking the ahi tuna or scallops and a crisp glass of white, or a Three Cheese Grill and a pint from the local Switchgear brewery, everyone’s taste has a home.

My personal order as a seven-year-old when the restaurant opened was the peanut butter and jelly panini with an adventurous cup of lobster bisque on the side. A perfect example of how whether you’re looking for a bar top or a white tablecloth, there’s a seat for every occasion. And no matter how fancy you’re trying to be, I think everyone agrees that the house-made chips may just be in their top three favorite menu items. And who doesn’t love the little basket of fresh, made-in-house bread?
Another signature touch that speaks to the incredibly intentional atmosphere is a tradition that regulars will remember fondly– menus being tucked inside of old books. “Children received age-appropriate story books, guests who were gardeners received gardening books, those who we knew personally from the racetrack would get a Popular Mechanics Book. We tried our best to match the books to the customers.” Locals and visitors alike will always hold on to those menus hidden inside books with a nostalgia as warm as Elkhart Lake summer. That, and seeing John crunching numbers at the end of the bar using a handwritten tally system towards the end of service. Although an upscale restaurant, at its heart, Lake Street Café has always been a Wisconsin family operation. It’s all the good stuff you want during a night out without any pretentiousness.
During my conversation with Lynn, I told her that a tell-tale sign of a thriving business is not just measured in individual success, but the ripples that a business sends out into the community. This is clear when you consider the countless Lake Street employees who have begun their own remarkable culinary ventures. Countless others credit their time working under John and Lynn as the reason they know how to properly sear a fine cut of meat or debone a fish, or why they have knowledge such as Shiraz and Syrah being the same grape but from different regions. It’s families like the Shovan’s who have shared their knowledge and passion with others along the way that makes Elkhart Lake a legendary destination.
These days at Lake Street, diners can expect the traditional atmosphere they love with a few modern updates. Although John never used computers, thanks to Jake bringing his experience back home, the waitstaff has enjoyed a POS system since 2021. The book menus have also been replaced with more sleek, easier to clean menus. What hasn’t changed though is what the menu holds. Mainstay dishes from the good old days of 1999 – tenderloin Shiraz, orecchiette, and shitake chicken.

After 25 years, it’s not a matter of completely re-inventing the wheel. It’s a matter of continuing to see a creative vision through with everything your family’s got and relying on other families to fill the seats at your table. Where does one go beyond a quarter of a century serving up fine food and wine to the village? “I am winding down a little more these days”, Lynn smiles with equal parts joy and relief. “Thanks to an amazing staff, I am able to take time away with the confidence that things will run well. From front of house to back of house to our office, I can’t say enough about my employees. Truly. We’ve had employees that have been here for a decade and counting. The future is bright. Jake and Sydney help whenever they can. One day they’ll take on a larger role. Today is not quite that day. Until then, I’ll keep showing up here as long as I’m having fun.”

6 Memorable Things to Do This Memorial Day Weekend in Elkhart Lake
The weather is warm, smells of a sizzling barbecue float through the air, and the sweet sounds of an Elkhart Lake summer echo throughout the village…It’s Memorial Day Weekend. The three-day unofficial kick off of summer is right around the corner, so we’ve put together a few ways you can dive into the festivities of this special holiday weekend.

1 | Listen to Live Music
Summer. Live. Music. Those words are like music to our ears. It’s more than just the music, it’s the way that people come together, whether you’re visiting for the day, the week, or you live here. The Tiki Bar and The Osthoff Lake Deck are the perfect venues to sip on a drink, take in the beautiful views, and enjoy the sweet sounds of summer.

2 | Get on the Water
Grab a kayak and go! It’s your first opportunity of the summer season to rent watersports and soak up the blue, green waters. Check out Elkhart Lake Watersports on the lakefront of The Shore Club Resort or Osthoff Watersports on the lakefront of The Osthoff Resort. Heads up, the water still might be a bit cold, but we know some of you can’t wait to jump in.

4 | Browse the Farmers & Artisans Market
There is nothing quite like strolling through the first farmers market of the year on a sunny Saturday morning. Pick up fresh produce from local farmers, unique crafts from local artists, and, of course, the fan favorite spring rolls. Check out the variety of vendors that will be there this Saturday, May 25th from 8am to 12pm.

3 | Grab a Brat at Memorial Park
Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and snag a spot for The Village’s annual Memorial Day program at Memorial Park. Take a moment during this holiday weekend to remember the thousands that have given their lives in honor of our country. After the ceremony, grab a brat or burger from the The Lions Club Brat Fry — 10am to 1:30pm.
The Memorial Day Program will be held Saturday, May 25th at 11am at Memorial Park on the corner of Chicago Street and South Lincoln Street.

5| Soak Up the Sunset at Road America
Even though it’s not a major race weekend at Road America, you can still get on the track! Check out their Sunset Cruises which are a leisurely, low-speed, 3 lap experience of the 4-mile track at sunset. Space is limited for for each of these activities, so make sure to sign up ahead of time.

6 | Find a Spot at Fireman’s Park & Beach
The weather for Memorial Day Weekend is shining bright just in time for the official opening of Fireman’s Park & Beach. Snag a picnic table or two, fire up the grill, and gather with friends and family.
There is no shortage of memories to be made this Memorial Day. For more vacation ideas and fun things to do, follow along with the Elkhart Lake Life Blog all summer long.
Exploring Hidden Family Gems: A Summer Getaway for All Ages
Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve finally entered the month when it’s safe to put plants in the ground! My family always went with the Memorial Day rule for planting when I was a kid. While it was an important weekend for the plants, it was equally important for me and all the other kids at school who had one thing and one thing only on our minds – the countdown to summer! Whether or not gardening is your thing, I think we can all agree that even the sights and wonderful smells from others’ gardens reminds us all that summer is near.
Maybe you’re a water sports lover. Maybe you’re more of a poolside reader or beach lounger. Maybe you’re into exploring trails, trees, and wildlife by foot or by bike. Maybe you can’t wait for the moment when it’s warm enough to finally eat on the deck and then roast marshmallows over the fire with the company of fireflies. Maybe you simply want to read a book, take a walk, or enjoy a cup of coffee with your partner while your kids do what kids do best in the summertime – explore, roam, and in the case of Elkhart Lake – splash.
One of the beautiful parts about Elkhart Lake is that it shines in just about every aspect of summer family leisure. One of the best parts about the village is you can count on being able to choose your own adventure at your family’s pace and for every member’s interest. From exploring the water’s scenery to heading into town for a live performance, the village provides a necessary dose of slowing down with just enough action to keep activity seekers occupied. It’s a summer camp for all ages. Here are a few gems for your family to investigate as you’re planning your summer trip.

The Theater at the Shore Club – choreographed musical shows in the historic theater
Each summer the Shore Club Theater teams up with The Pankratz Art Exchange to bring entertainment to Elkhart Lake. Shows are held every Wednesday evening from June until August. The performances are a longstanding tradition in the village and end up on many families’ summer vacation itineraries each year. As a kid, the night my friends and I would get tickets to check out the new music was always an exciting night we looked forward to. While the theme of the setlist changes summer to summer, it’s always lively with songs from a range of decades and genres making it a perfect night out for families. Pankratz has just wrapped up auditions for this summer’s cast and will be rehearsing round the clock for their 2024 “Turn It Up” performance. Stay tuned for tickets here: pae.ticketleap.com.

The Osthoff Kid’s Club – a vacation win win, for parents and kids ages 4-12
One of the reasons Elkhart Lake is legendary is because the oldest and the youngest in the family both agree on that fact. It’s a place where no one gets left behind when it comes to activities and no matter what age you are – everyone’s in vacation mode! Although summer trips are all about families making memories together, it’s also important for parents and kids to have a little freedom to experience the place on their own terms. The Osthoff Resort always does an excellent job of taking the reins for a few hours at their Kid’s Club. From learning how to paddle a kayak on the lake, casting a fishing pole, cooking classes, and crafts, the Kid’s Club caters to a variety of kids’ personalities and interests. It’s best to make reservations ahead of time and you can find the summer schedule of activities here: osthoff.com.

4 Miles of Fitness – walk, run, bike at Road America’s woodland trails & paved course
Even though I’ve been visiting the local road racing track since I was in a stroller, I’ll be the first to tell you I know very little trivia about the actual cars that zoom around the course. While I appreciate the world class engines, I think it’s the enthusiasm from the world class visitors who travel from all over to Road America that is really exciting. There’s a specific energy that only Road America holds and a huge part of that is the culture as well as the landscape that the track is nestled into. The whole place glows in the early evening as the sun shifts through the lush leafy trees. A place typically known for roaring engine noise takes on a new calmer personality in the evening.
In recent years the racetrack has made it so that you don’t have to be behind the wheel of a fancy car to enjoy the twists and turns of the terrain. Starting this month on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., bikers and runners, walkers even strollers can hit the trails throughout the property as well as some of the paved surface of the racetrack. Check out more details including a map of the route before you go here: 4-miles-of-fitness.

The Splash Shack at Osthoff Water Sports – gear up for lake time
Packing for the lake seems simple but when you’re trying to load up the car or leave the hotel room in an excited hurry fueled by summer weather, things often get missed. Although a little town, Elkhart Lake has you covered for your beach day shopping needs. Once you get to the lake, head over to the Osthoff Resort’s waterfront. There you will find the watersports rental area and the Splash Shack. Goggles, SPF, beach toys, floaties, and snacks are all stocked on the Splash Shack’s shelves should you need to get some backup supplies for your beach bag.

Village Public Library – reading material rain or shine, plus a summer program for all ages
Situated within the village park (a gem all its own) is the public library. I highly recommend signing up for a library card, especially if you are someone who returns to Elkhart Lake each year. The cards are free and it’s a wonderful resource for refreshing your reading list. Visitors and locals are lucky to have such a wonderful place to access reading material in this little village. In addition to the selection of books on the shelves, the library always hosts summer programming for adults and children of nearly every age group. It’s a great option to have in your back pocket throughout the summer especially when thunderstorms roll through town. It’s also a great place to meet other families. The summer library program is where I met my best friend from childhood. We’re still dear friends. All that to say, you never know where a local library may lead you. Check out the summer program schedule here: www.elkhartlakepubliclibrary.org.
There are many reasons why families who visit Elkhart Lake tend to return to the village year after year. Some say visiting this place is like stepping back in time and helps their families slow down so they can connect in a more meaningful way. Others feel it’s like returning home or reconnecting with an old friend they haven’t seen in a while. Don’t be surprised if after a few hours of wandering in the village you find yourself walking with a little more ease through the day. Once your family visits Elkhart Lake you’ll likely be saying “We usually try a new place every year, but we will definitely be making this place a repeat!”

Kate Vollrath was born and raised in Elkhart Lake. After several years of working and adventuring in Anchorage, Alaska and a year studying in Italy, she has returned to her favorite freshwater shoreline. Wisconsin will always be home. The incredible local culture, extraordinary community, and summer Sundays on the water are what keep her rooted and returning no matter where life takes her.
The Lake Isn’t the Only One Sparkling: Explore Hidden Gems in the Village This Summer
It’s April. Summer is the nearest it’s been all year. Soon the lake will be warm enough for a dip (or maybe a few brave souls have already plunged?!) and the days will be long enough for swimming, paddling, gardening, the farmer’s market, al fresco dinners, taking a walk without a jacket, wearing flip flops, plus additional daylight for lounging beside the water while diving into the beach reads we’ve collected during the long winter. Growing up in Elkhart Lake, the anticipation of summer was always something everyone could feel beneath their skin. The village and its people live for the summertime excitement that brews inside of everyone knowing that memories will be made on the water and in town.
As a small town Wisconsonite who remembers the joy of jumping into the water and listening to the wind blow through the trees every summer once school let out, my advice to anyone who visits the village this summer is this – listen to the lake. What do I mean by that? Pay attention to depth – the sights, sounds, and aromas of the local village, as well as the stories of the local people. Let the layers of the lake and the community seep into you. Take notice of how the water changes color depending on the time of day and the weather. (That is an activity in and of itself if you can believe it.) Take a walk with the only goal being the chance to smell the hydrangeas in bloom.
Here are a few hidden gem experiences your family can enjoy within the village. Between the local cuisine, art, nature and history, there are lots of ways to enjoy the laid-back way of life.
How to take in views of the lake:
Is the lake blue or is it green? I’ll let you decide after you skim across the surface with a paddle board or kayak! While motorboats get a lot of credit as being the most exciting way to experience the lake, I actually prefer to kayak or paddle board when I get the chance. Reason being, you can be closer to the water and move more slowly across the surface. You can also access shallow areas more safely. This gives you a great opportunity to experience the lake’s wildlife more intimately. If you make it to Turtle Bay to see the lily pads, be sure to approach them with care as not to uproot them with your paddle. They are a beloved and protected species in Wisconsin and a rather enchanting sight, especially when in bloom.

If you are interested in experiencing a fuel-powered watercraft, the sunrise and sunset pontoon cruises offered at the Osthoff Resort are an excellent option to enjoy the lake during calm hours of day. It’s a great way to cruise around the perimeter of the water. Cruises are open to the public and take the stress out of having to operate a boat on your own. Sheboatin’ is slightly newer on the scene here providing a pedal-operated pontoon experience. They can accommodate groups up to ten.
No matter how you choose to venture onto the water, remember that Sundays are a no-wake day (only electric motors or human powered boats are allowed). Swimmers should stay inside the buoys and paddlers should proceed past the buoys with caution all other days of the week. It’s a good idea to read the full list of lake and boating regulations before you head out on the water here: https://www.elkhartlake.com/explore/lake-etiquette-regulations/.
How to take in views of the land:
In other places you may need to be an expert golfer or at least dress the part of an expert to enter the clubhouse. Not at Quit Qui Oc Golf Course. They even have a deal on Tuesday evenings where after 5:30 p.m. you can play “The Loop” (the first five holes of the course) for less than ten dollars. I am far from a pro and find the course to be a welcoming place to enjoy the rolling hills and trees that turn electric green in early summer.
If you are more interested in simply walking instead of swinging a club, the Ice Age Trail should not be missed. It’s an impressive trail system through the state forest that provides an excellent peek into the glacially carved terrain that the village is nestled within. I’m a fan of the Greenbush section (see map here). Pro tip – get your heart pumping on the trail and then head back to the beach to cool off in the lake. (Depending on the time of year you venture into the forest, it’s a good idea to bring insect repellent or wear clothing that covers your arms and legs.)

June Vollrath Park is another option where you can wander beneath Wisconsin’s beautiful tree canopies. The trails behind the baseball fields feel like a little hidden jungle, are often quiet, and a very short drive (or a doable walk or bike ride) from the village center.
Where to taste laid-back local fare:
One of the most impressive parts about Elkhart Lake’s local culture is the amount of quality dining options within a small area. While I recommend trying all of the restaurants, sometimes when town gets busy it can be nice to have an option for a quick snack. Consider wandering through the Saturday Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market and checking out the egg roll stand (they are usually posted up near the train tracks).

Another casual option for a snack or lunch are the famous sandwiches at the Siebkens Stop-Inn Tavern. Locals were raised on these sandwiches featuring cold cuts between rye bread. After biting into one on a summer’s day you will see why. Just down the little hill from the tavern, in the back of P.A.M.’s restaurant, is Siebkens “Secret Bar”. It’s tiny and hidden and takes you back in time.
Where to learn a new craft and a little bit of history:
The village has a strong tradition of art and culture. It’s one of the things that keeps people coming back and curious to continue learning more. If your family is into experiencing new flavors together, the Osthoff Resort’s cooking school is the perfect place to make memories (and hopefully improve the meals you make in your own kitchen.) Two Fish Gallery, the local ceramic studio and sculpture garden, offers pottery classes through the Two Fish School. Their classes do fill up quickly, and word has it they have some new technique classes in the works, so visit their website to stay up to date on when sign ups launch.

In addition to the village’s natural beauty and art, it is also uniquely influenced by a history of road racing. The Throttlestop has an impressive collection of historic motorcycles, vintage cars, and engines. It’s a great place to visit whether or not you make it out to Road America.
Although summer is a time to go, go, go, sometimes to truly get the most out of a place, you need to venture below the surface, give the less obvious experiences a chance. Sometimes slowing down and doing less is actually what brings our souls more. Sometimes you need to take the long way for the sake of soaking in a view or having a conversation with someone new. The village can’t wait to welcome you into its hidden gems and special way of life.

Exploring The Elkhart Way: Insights into a Sustainable Movement
The fact that Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin continues to be the place I call home no matter where I wander is an incredible gift. One of the luckiest things the stars above the lake have granted me. Growing up in a place that is deeply loved by locals and by visitors who continue to visit year after year has inspired me all my life. Although I love it during each season, there’s a quality of worldliness that the village takes on in the summertime. The vibrancy of Elkhart Lake’s local way of life grew a hunger within me long ago to explore and seek out exceptional natural beauty as well as deeply rooted communities outside of my hometown. Because my home village is little, I always had this sense that a huge part of the world was literally around the corner, or just past the four-way stop.

Exploring has brought me to another little town known for its freshwater shorelines. When I first arrived in Truckee, California I noticed it contained my favorite aspects of other places I had previously called home. I’m not the first one to migrate from Elkhart Lake to this little place nestled within the Sierra Nevada mountains. I’m part of a group of Wisconsinites that arrived to the forests and lakes here and thought “this feels like home with the addition of a little elevation and greater snow accumulation to play in.”
Immediately upon arriving I noticed the Keep Tahoe Blue stickers (the campaign that inspired Keep Elkhart Blue) stamped on the sea of Subarus and pickup trucks. A desire to preserve the lake’s quality and educate visitors about how to participate in that project is strong. Everyone appreciates the beauty of the water resources that places are named after. Not everyone is aware of how human activity impacts it and how they can play a role in upholding its quality.
Moving to Truckee has deepened my understanding and brewed more curiosity than ever about the opportunities and challenges that are unique to tourist communities. Stunning places are often home to steadfast communities. In Elkhart there’s a shop inspired by this exact feeling: Small Town Big Family. These special places are also home to a distinct set of tensions. While tourism in the Truckee/Tahoe area is on a different scale and calendar than Elkhart Lake there are some conversations that hit very close to home.
Concerns about natural resource access and the preservation of those natural resources, waste, noise, affordable long term housing, cohabitating with an increased population size during certain times of the year, increased traffic/parking issues, and the continuation of a pace of life that attracts visitors to the area in the first place are just a few of the conversations many tourist destinations around the country (and the world) are having.

In addition to the wide use of bumper stickers throughout the Tahoe basin there are also local programs that have provided educational signage at trailheads to promote stewardship and preserve wildlife as well as initiatives to reduce usage of single use plastics and styrofoam. Volunteer opportunities for visitors to get involved with trail maintenance and water quality improvement are also offered. Since moving to Truckee, I’ve increasingly witnessed printed materials and signage around town that guides visitors into the realm of stewardship and participation in celebrating and preserving the place’s natural landscapes.
I’ve only been here for a few years so there’s still a lot to learn about the work that local people here are doing to preserve their home while also educating and welcoming people who visit. There’s an attitude amongst locals all around the world that requires newcomers to earn their credibility and prove their commitment to the place. The word local and who and how that word is defined is something I will be fascinated by and questioning my whole life, even more so now that I am considered a newcomer to the area I currently live. Some days I still feel like a visitor gathering information about what it means to be a part of this place in a positive way.
Turns out in Tahoe, and in every other place I’ve found myself, having a Wisconsin license plate or accent makes a great first impression. But what really seals the deal when trying to break the ice is a Wisconsin attitude. After shoveling during last year’s historic snowfall, I think I’ve finally earned the badge of local from my older and wiser neighbors on the street. Helping them shovel while they were out of town and bringing them treats as well as borrowing snow tools and gathering wisdom during power outages during huge storms helped me become a part of my little street community in a deeper way. There’s nothing like the deepest snow you’ve ever seen to bond you to the others across the street snow-blowing their driveways.
Once the snow finally melted, I found myself having conversations with seasoned fishermen at the public docks at Donner Lake, a small local spot for fishing, swimming, and boating. It’s much smaller than Lake Tahoe, but still receives droves of visitors during the summertime. One of the fishermen I met last summer encouraged me to go get a permit, a paddleboard, and drop a line to catch my own dinner. Although he shared his lament over witnessing his hometown change as a result of tourism and the huge shifts within the local housing market, he quickly pivoted the conversation and welcomed me into his beautiful perspective of the area with generosity and joy.
Sometimes education comes through a conversation on a public dock. Sometimes an invitation into one’s way of life and a little bit of in-person storytelling is as valuable as reading about local fish species, fishing permits, and water quality on a public sign. Every channel of communication holds wisdom. The longer I’ve been in Truckee the more I’ve realized that those who’ve been here a long time often embed stewardship and a strong desire for community care within their definition of who they trust and who they welcome into their home.

Growing up in Elkhart Lake provided a similar ethic to those raised there. From a young age I learned the importance of going beyond just passively passing through a beautiful place and trying to contribute to the beauty. This requires a lot of awareness built on paying close attention and asking a lot of questions from those with more experience. It’s humbling, and it takes time, and oftentimes there are really simple interactions that change everything for the better.
It’s one thing to be a consumer, it’s another much grander, purposeful thing to be a connector/contributor when visiting or moving to an area. We get to choose how we engage with the places we spend time in. I credit the village that raised me for teaching me how to do so wholeheartedly and with a mindset of respect and openness to learning what a community celebrates as well as what worries them.
At the heart of it, Elkhart Lake has taught me that to know a place is to know its people. To know a place is to know the businesses and to go beyond being a patron. This means your face is one that brings a smile and a sigh of relief to the owners and employees when they see you walk through the door on a busy night because they are confident you are also on their team, rooting for them and respecting their hard work. To know a place is to know its seasons and how the energy of the place ebbs and flows, to witness the freeze and the thaw, and also the shifting shoulder seasons in between the peak times.
I realize some will never know the intricacies of what makes the village of Elkhart Lake’s heart beat when it’s covered in snow. Albeit small, the summer window is often the opportunity to let people see the glorious view. Sometimes a tiny window is all we get to show people a way of life and demonstrate to them how to participate in its creation.
Tourism is difficult work no matter the zip code. Each area of the map has a history with growing pains it has navigated and continues to navigate along the way. In the midst of trying to make sense of the delicate balance between the issues my new community faces and the overwhelming beauty I feel so lucky to experience every day, I often think about the community I grew up in and the parallel conversations taking place.

How can we all continue having conversations about the future of healthy waterways and trails, housing opportunities, waste, noise, a feeling of balance between high and low season, and most importantly – a connection to the place and the way of life that we all celebrate and hold onto because it gives us deep meaning? This meaningful lifestyle is the very reason people are drawn to places such as Elkhart Lake after all.
How do we welcome people to the village, beaches, and the boat launch while also educating them about stewardship and safety? How can we continue building bridges and fostering partnerships across different organizations within the community that share similar concerns and hopes? How can we be models in walking through businesses and natural landscapes to the rhythm that our special village hums?
I wish I had the answers to all these very important questions. While I don’t have all the answers, I do believe in the continued creation of long-lasting memories and natural beauty in Elkhart Lake that we can all enjoy. I will continue wading into these questions in the way that Elkhart Lake has taught me to do – with care and curiosity and an openness to the possibilities that small magical places offer us. I hope others will join me in reflecting on what it means to us to live out the Elkhart way.
Please stay tuned for ways to get involved with Elkhart Lake’s sustainable tourism initiatives. And if you find yourself sharing about how you enjoy the Elkhart Lake way of life on social media, please tag @elkhartlake and consider using #elkhartway. We’d love to follow along with how you embrace and share what makes this place exceptional.
